Jewellery belonging to royal families hits the auction market

<p>A series of beautiful and historically-important jewels are set to hit the auction market next week.</p> <p>They are expected to sell for record-breaking prices, as they are all linked to royalty throughout the world, and spanning hundreds of years.</p> <p>The collection includes a set of sapphire jewels once owned by a member of Russia's ill-fated Romanov dynasty, diamond bracelets from Marie Antoinette's collection and a bangle given to the Duchess of Windsor as an anniversary present from her husband.</p> <p><span>Two tiaras once owned by Empress Joséphine of France are also included in the sale, along with tiaras owned by other European royals. </span></p> <p><span>Jewels by Bulgari, Harry Winston, Van Cleef &amp; Arpels and Cartier are also among the spectacularly glitzy collection. </span></p> <p><span>Auction houses Christie's and Sotheby's are auctioning off the items next week to prospective buyers, as visitors try to outbid their chances of owning a </span>piece of history.</p> <p>The big ticket item at the Christie's auction, happening on November 9th in Geneva, is a pair of diamond bracelets that belonged to the last queen of France.</p> <p><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7845362/marie-antoinette-jewels.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/528194fee718455bbae20343be1d372e" /></p> <p><em>Image credits: Christie's</em></p> <p>A blue velvet box, labeled 'bracelets off Queen Marie Antoinette', houses <span>the double bracelets, each composed of three strands of diamonds and a large barrette clasp, for a total of 112 diamonds.</span></p> <p>Now in the possession of a European royal family, the bracelets are said to sell for at $3 million.</p> <p><span>"To find jewels with over 200 years of French royal history is truly something that collectors and passionate jewellery people from all over the world will be keeping an eye on," Max Fawcett, head of Christie's jewellery department in Geneva, said.</span></p> <p><span>Also being auctioned at Christie's is a ruby and diamond bangle owned by Wallis Simpson. </span></p> <p><span><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7845363/ruby.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/9b7a68eaa4d7489b90b0114a72e8a487" /></span></p> <p><em>Image credit: Christie's</em></p> <p><span>The former King Edward VIII ordered the Cartier bracelet for his American wife on their first wedding anniversary in 1938 after abdicating the throne.</span></p> <p><span>The jewellery is expected to sell for close to $3 million. </span></p> <p><span>The bangle features an inscription that reads, "For our first anniversary of June third".</span></p> <p><span>Featured at the Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels sale is a sapphire and diamond brooch and matching ear-clips once owned by the Romanov dynasty of Russia.</span></p> <p><span>They are from the collection of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, the cousin of Tsar Nicholas II. </span></p> <p><span>With a range of other royal jewels up for auction, the auction houses in Geneva are expecting a bidding war that will result in millions of dollars of </span>profit.</p> <p><em>Image credits: Sotheby's / Christie's</em></p>

Dynasty star's shock death just 10 days after diagnosis

<p dir="ltr">American actor Michael Nader, who is known best for his starring role on the original <em>Dynasty</em>, has passed away at 76-years-old.</p> <p dir="ltr">Jodi Lister, his wife, took to social media to announce to the world the sad news.</p> <p dir="ltr">She revealed he died in his California home from untreatable cancer on August 23, only 10 days after being diagnosed.</p> <p dir="ltr">“His death and diagnosis was sudden and unexpected and I have never experienced such agony as watching my soulmate die before my eyes,” Lister wrote via Nader’s official Facebook page.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We had 18 wonderful years together with the many dogs we fostered and adopted. Recently, Michael was so thrilled to reconnect with his friends from the cast of Dynasty during Emma Samms virtual event to help raise funds for Long-Covid research.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He was a beautiful and fascinating man with many talents and skills. Image: ABC / Getty Images</em></div> </div> </div> </div> <p dir="ltr">He also starred in the popular soap opera <em>All My Children</em> as Dimitri Marick, from 1991 to 2001, before he reprised the role in 2013.</p> <p dir="ltr">Nader has previously been open about his substance abuse issues, with Lister revealing he had been writing a book about his battles before his death.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He was working on a book about his life and addiction before he passed,” she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He had so many talents and skills and it’s hard to imagine living life without his beautiful and wonderful presence, joy and laughter.”</p> <p dir="ltr">His last and final project was the reprisal of his hit character on <em>All My Children</em>, back in 2013.</p> <p dir="ltr">Before his brief return, Nader told reporters he was “out of the game” and had made peace with the idea of never returning to act.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I did a couple of guest spots on Cold Case, and little things. Then I started drifting around and going to those, ‘Let’s see what they look like today interviews.’ And you know what? The industry has changed so much. It’s sit around and wait,” he told Michael Fairman in 2013.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I have a friend, a very good actor.</p> <p dir="ltr">“For seven years he did not get work. All of a sudden, he started to get some voiceover work, and it was enough to make a living in Hollywood. (Then) I got call that he had a cerebral haemorrhage in his sleep.</p> <p dir="ltr">“They found him three days later with his dogs around him. So he waited by the phone, he got a little bite of life, and then he was taken.</p> <p dir="ltr">“And I said, ‘You know, I am so lucky of what I did, and to live in this wonderful community in Lake Tahoe. I am at peace.’”</p> <p dir="ltr">Nader is survived by wife Lister, daughter Lindsay, stepmother Lillian and sister Stephanie.</p>

<p>Soap operas. Whether you love them or hate them, we’ve all seen at least one in our lives – and usually one is enough to know everything that’s happening in the entire series! Soapies regularly top the list of the most-watched shows around the world, and many have been around longer than most of their stars!</p> <p>Here are our favourite soap operas of all time.</p> <p><em><strong>Days of Our Lives</strong></em></p> <p>With an unbelievable 12,300 episodes aired since it began in 1965, <em>Days of Our Lives</em> has produced some unfathomable stories (like the amnesiac war vet who started a romance with his sister) and launched the careers of countless actors.</p> <p><strong><em>General Hospital</em></strong></p> <p>Clocking in at over 13,000 episodes, <em>General Hospital</em> has the distinction of being the longest-running soap opera in history, first airing in 1963. The series has landed many cameos in its 50-plus year history, including Sammy Davis, Jr., Leonard Nimoy and Elizabeth Taylor.</p> <p><em><strong>Home and Away</strong></em></p> <p>It’s the Aussie show that’s inspired millions to visit our beautiful country. Since it began in 1988, <em>Home and Away</em> has launched the careers of some of our most successful exports, such as Melissa George, Isla Fisher, Chris Hemsworth and Heath Ledger.</p> <p><strong><em>The Young and the Restless</em></strong></p> <p>The US soap, which first aired in 1973, featured appearances by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Il Divo, Lionel Richie and Enrique Iglesias. The entire series has been aired in Australia since 1974 and has been one of the US’ most successful soap operas down under.</p> <p><em><strong>Coronation Street</strong></em></p> <p>It’s the longest-running UK soap of all time, beginning back in 1960 and still airing to this day. Aside from being the top-rated soapie in the UK, <em>Coronation Street</em> has also been popular in Australia and New Zealand.</p> <p><em><strong>Dynasty</strong></em></p> <p>Golden Globe-winning <em>Dynasty</em> was one of the hit shows of the 80s, launching the career of Heather Locklear. Running for nine seasons, the soap brought us some unbelievable storylines, including the royal wedding interrupted by terrorists in Moldavia.</p> <p><em><strong>Neighbours</strong></em></p> <p>Everybody needs good neighbours! Premiering back in 1986, <em>Neighbours</em> is Australia’s longest-running soap and one of our best performing international exports (particularly in the UK). It shot many actors to stardom, including Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce and Kylie Minogue.</p> <p><strong><em>The Bold and the Beautiful</em></strong></p> <p>Created as a sister show to <em>The Young and the Restless</em>,<em> The Bold and the Beautiful</em> has found success in its own right. Dynasty: where are they now?

<p>The drama, the glamour, the hair… <em>Dynasty</em> hit our screens in 1981 and ran for nine seasons before its cancellation in 1989. It was the series that shot Heather Locklear to fame, but since this year marks its 35<sup>th</sup> anniversary, we decided to take a look at where the Carringtons are today.</p> <p><strong>John Forsythe</strong></p> <p>After <em>Dynasty</em>, Forsythe starred in the short-lived sitcom, <em>The Powers That Be</em>. He also voiced the mysterious Charlie in 2000’s <em>Charlie’s Angels</em> starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. Forsythe sadly passed away in 2010 at the age of 92.</p> <p><strong>Linda Evans</strong></p> <p>Currently aged 73, Evans followed <em>Dynasty</em> with a number of TV movies such as <em>The Stepsister</em>, <em>Dazzle</em> and <em>She’ll Take Romance</em>. She returned to her role as Krystle in <em>Dynasty: The Reunion</em> in 1991.</p> <p><strong>Joan Collins</strong></p> <p>Collins, now 82, continued to experience success as an actress and also established a writing career, penning 17 books. Collins was awarded both an OBE in 1997 and a DBE in 2015 by the Queen and is currently married to her fifth husband, Percy Gibson.</p> <p><strong>John James</strong></p> <p>Following the series, Colby moved on to the <em>Dynasty</em> spinoff, <em>The Colbys</em> in 1985, which ran for two seasons. After this he continued to act in soaps such as <em>As the World Turns</em> and <em>All My Children</em>. The 59-year-old now lives in L.A. with wife Denise.</p> <p><strong>Gordon Thomson</strong></p> <p>Now 70, Thomson continued acting in soaps after <em>Dynasty</em>, with roles on <em>The Young and the Restless</em>, <em>Days of Our Lives</em> and <em>Santa Barbara</em>. He also appeared in the 2006 Best Picture Academy Award Winner <em>Little Miss Sunshine</em>.</p> <p><strong>Pamela Bellwood</strong></p> <p>Pamela, now 64, played Krystle’s friend Claudia Barrows from 1981 to 1986. After <em>Dynasty</em>, she continued to appear in TV series <em>Murder She Wrote</em>, <em>The Twilight Zone</em> and <em>Criminal Minds</em>. She is married to photographer Nik Wheeler and still acts occasionally under the name Pamela Bellwood-Wheeler.</p> <p><strong>Pamela Sue Martin</strong></p> <p>63-year-old Martin, who played Fallon, continued her career with TV roles and also moved into writing and producing. In the 2000s, she became more involved in the theatre, directing plays for the Interplanetary Theatre Group.</p> <p><strong>Al Corley</strong></p> <p>After Corley, 59, was fired from the series after two seasons and his character recast, he returned for the 1991 reunion. Since then, he has had few acting roles. He currently lives in Los Angeles.</p> <p><strong>Heather Locklear</strong></p> <p>Locklear, 54, continued to have success in film and TV after <em>Dynasty</em> ended. She became famous for her role as Amanda Woodward on <em>Melrose Place</em> as well as parts in <em>T. J. Hooker</em> and <em>Spin City</em>.
